When writing non-fiction, research is crucial. In fact, research is what sets nonfiction apart from fiction. This is because, in every work of non-fiction, one has to provide the sources for the information provided. Here are a few tips to help you research effectively for non-fiction works:

1. Set the scope

Before you start your research, you need to come up with a topic/theme for it. You also need to single out your target audience. Then, you need to create an outline for whatever bit of non-fiction you plan to write.

2. Decide on your structure

Although you are working on non-fiction, your work needs to have flow to be captivating. Therefore, you should try to order your writing in a story-like structure. Your work has to have a flow to it and be fun to read while building up to a climax.

3. Research your chosen genre

For your writing to be effective, you need to look into other works within your genre. Try to see what works and doesn’t, and what makes the best works stand out in your field. Emulating their style will make your work better.Use the right research methods and toolsUse multiple credible sources for your writing. There are many sources of information that can be used, including books, newspaper articles, trusted websites, and magazines. Feel free to use the internet to search for material, but remember that most sources on the web are not credible. You can also conduct interviews and field research if you have the resources and time. If working on an autobiography, strive to revisit the locations instead of working from memory as it can be fuzzy.

4.  Time yourself

Sometimes, people can lose themselves in research and end up taking way too long to produce a piece of work. To avoid this, set deadlines and stick to them. If you need to do further research later on, you can take time to do it while your draft is underway.

These techniques will help you carry out more effective non-fiction research. Get researching and writing and remember, we are here to support you in every step of your self publishing journey. We offer coaching, ghostwriting, editing, publishing and cover design services!
